What Are Those Hoses on Our 4x4 Recovery Truck? A Look at Our Central Tyre Inflation System

If you’ve ever spotted our 4×4 dual cab tilt tray around Hervey Bay, Maryborough or out on K’gari (Fraser Island), you might have noticed something unusual hanging down beside the wheels.

It’s a question we get asked surprisingly often:

"What are those hoses running to your tyres?"

They’re part of our Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS), a specialist piece of equipment that makes our heavy off-road recovery truck considerably more versatile across the Fraser Coast.

From adjusting tyre pressures on-the-fly to detecting punctures and maintaining inflation on leaking tyres, it is one of the most critical operational features on our fleet.

What is a Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS)?

A Central Tyre Inflation System allows the equipment operator to adjust vehicle tyre pressures directly from the cab without manually connecting air hoses to individual wheels.

On our six-wheel recovery truck, the CTIS allows us to inflate or deflate all six tyres simultaneously. This rapid adjustment is essential when transitioning across the diverse and challenging terrain of K’gari, moving seamlessly between soft sand tracks, inland trails, and hard-packed beach driving surfaces.

Why Do Tyre Pressures Matter for Heavy Recovery?

Tyre pressure directly governs how a heavy-duty 4×4 recovery truck handles heavy loads and difficult terrain:

  • Flotation and Traction: Lowering tyre pressures within safe operating limits increases the tyre contact patch, significantly improving flotation over soft sand.

  • Ride Comfort: Reduced pressures absorb severe impacts over corrugated inland tracks, protecting both the vehicle frame and onboard recovery equipment.

  • Load Management: Pressures can be recalibrated instantly to match axle weight ratings when carrying heavy loads or returning to sealed highways.

Operating Pressures: What PSI Do We Run?

Our heavy recovery system operates across a robust range from 30 PSI to 120 PSI, tailored specifically to terrain conditions and payload weights:

Terrain & Operating EnvironmentRecommended CTIS Pressure
K’gari Soft Sand Sections & Inland Tracks~45 PSI (Optimized for maximum traction and flotation)
Hard-Packed Beach Surfaces (Loaded)60–80 PSI (Adjusted for payload and speed)
Sealed Highways & Heavy TowingUp to 120 PSI (Standard highway load rating)

How Quickly Can We Adjust All Six Tyres?

Speed is critical during emergency recoveries. Our system achieves rapid inflation and deflation times through specialized onboard auxiliary hardware:

  • Deflation Time: Dropping all six tyres from highway pressure down to beach-ready operating levels takes approximately two minutes.

  • Inflation Time: Reinflating all tyres takes less than five minutes, powered by the truck’s engine-driven air compressor supplemented by auxiliary air storage tanks and a dedicated 24V helper compressor.

Because adjustments can be managed while rolling where conditions permit, our operators spend less time parked on tracks and more time executing safe vehicle recoveries.

Built-In Puncture Detection and Emergency Inflation

Operating in remote environments like K’gari means minimizing roadside exposure. The CTIS includes integrated diagnostic features:

  • Active Pressure Monitoring: The system continuously monitors pressure loss and instantly alerts the driver to punctures.

  • Compensated Air Supply: For minor punctures, the system continuously pumps compressed air into the affected tyre, maintaining sufficient pressure to drive the rig to a safe, stable assessment location.

Does CTIS Help with Vehicle Loading?

Yes. Dropping tyre pressures slightly lowers the overall deck height of our 4×4 tilt tray. This subtle adjustment optimizes loading angles when winching lower-clearance 4WDs, passenger cars, or commercial vehicles onto the tray.

What Happens If an External Air Hose Gets Damaged?

Operating in thick bushland and debris means external air lines occasionally sustain branch impacts. To prevent delays, our recovery trucks carry dedicated spare front and rear lines, allowing operators to complete quick field replacements in remote regions.
